“If white American feminist theory need not deal with the differences between us, and the resulting difference in our oppressions, then how do you deal with the fact that the women who clean your houses and tend your children while you attend conferences on feminist theory are, for the most part, poor women and women of Color? What is the theory behind racist feminism?”

-Audre Lorde (via soydulcedeleche)

I don’t understand these attacks on feminist theory. There’s tons of women of color fighting for women’s rights. And it’s a little bigoted to think that all white feminists are rich hire help and have time off work to attend conventions.

Some of us ARE just like you in more ways than some want to admit. And we do want your voice heard and we want to stop pointing fingers at eachother and start dismantling and ignoring the patriarchy. We can change the world but only together.

the poster above is why i hate white feminists. privilege-denying fucks.

Hey, bitch. I’m not denying prividle, If you actually talked to me or read my blog you’re know that. But instead of assuming everything about me, maybe you should I don’t know, ask me more? I KNOW all our experience is DIFFERENT, but the ultimate goal is the same. and frankly, HATING WHITE FEMINISTS is part of the fucking problem. Hating a whole group of people and not wanting to engage with them because of all the things you assume about them? Gee, that sounds like what feminism is trying to stop. I never said I don’t deal with the difference between us, We are ALL different. lumping us into GROUPS only severs to seperate us more at the end of the day. I want to learn about everyone’s culture, and expand my thoughts and experience. But you don’t fucking know me or what I’ve been through. YOu don’t know how I’ve been oppressed. You just think I haven’t at all, and I assume that because I have white priveldge all my other education or experience is negated by my skin color THAT YOU ASSUME indicated my background. That’s really disgusting. I don’t fucking have people WORKING For me, so this quote is not directed at me specifically, THAT is what I was talking as. THE LUMPING of all WHITE FEMINISTS TOGETHER. Like you just did. So yeah. I have a problem with that. NOT WITH YOU, or our differences or our lives or our experiences. I want us all to be free. I want to strive for that and reach out to people. It’s just really hard when there’s a bunch of people who just assume things about you and then shut down. That’s really how to keep the system going. At least I’m talking back and asking questions. You just shot me down because you assumed I was one of those people you don’t like. I wish you would take another look, instead of labeling and dismissing. Yes, lighter skinned people get privledges, that’s a given, but it’s sure not as hell a universal thing that grants us all magic powers. And if you’re a woman, that privledge isn’t as great as you think, unless you fit a mold. So, I’m not denying anything. I’m just saying, I may be white, but I fucking don’t have a job and am living in a shitty place, and thanks god I have family, cause I might be on the street if I didn’t. So historically, sure, but right now? You wanna split hairs? When we could all be helping eachother? There’s a few million other people fighting everyday. I don’t see my whiteness getting me a job. I see my old job being given to a white MAN because the men I worked with were uncomfortable with working with a woman. There are differences, and I acknowledge the hardships, btu seriously. Just because I might’ve had a better start than most, doesn’t mean when I hit hard times, I’m not like other people on welfare trying to get by. (via dianamcqueen)

I like how the first thing this white feminist, dianamcqueen, does is call a woman of color, soydulcedeleche, a bitch just because soydulcedeleche disagreed with her. Great job proving Audre Lorde’s point.

(via angrybrownbaby)

Hey look at me I’m such a good non-racist feminist that I called a black woman a bitch when she had the audacity to suggest that I don’t understand racism as well as she does.

(via ethiopienne)

Exactly. I was struck by that too, I couldn’t take anything else dianamcqueen said seriously or even waste time trying to formulate arguments against it because of her immediate, defensive disrespect for soydulcedeleche.

My mother cleans houses, and she is white. She cannot attend feminist conferences, protests, etc. because she lacks both the time and money. She is disadvantaged in so many ways, and is constantly oppressed. She would still, however, be more oppressed if she weren’t white and in the same situation. Plus if she weren’t white, her likelihood of being in this situation to begin with would have increased. Which is really what the quote is getting at. The quote does not literally mean that all white feminists have women of Color cleaning their houses or tending to their children while they attend conferences on feminist theory. It was simply an illustration of the advantages that white women have and the injustice in ignoring them. There is certainly—indubitably—injustice in that, and you cannot fight against people “lumping” all white feminists together as you try to claim that you have not had a different and privileged experience in being white. You have no right to lump yourself with those who experience forms of oppression that you never will. I am all for solidarity and a comprehensive understanding of people’s struggles, but denying one’s privilege and then defending doing so is unacceptable.

We all live busy lives, but let us not forget nor ignore the fact that some people are viewed as worth more than others. This is an injustice in itself but it presents many more hidden injustices within our daily lives which must be pinpointed and corrected. Gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, ability, intelligence, religion, place of birth, education, etc. should not be determinants of our value as human beings. In order to prevent further oppression and move beyond that which already exists, we must be aware of the problems we face.
